In the city centre's historic Ferreirasdorp district (the location of the first tented camps of early gold rush Joburg) you’ll find the Good Luck Bar, named in honour of the early 1890s drinking establishments that were said to have operated from this location, serving local mineworkers and newly arrived fortune hunters alike. This large capacity live music venue is part of the Sheds@1 Fox complex, a recently restored (2014) collection of historic warehouse that date back as far as 1893 (which is almost as far as you can go in this town considering that Joburg was only founded in 1886).
The stage itself is well placed in the centre to give both those on the raised balcony or the long tables by the bar, as well as the party crowd occupying the spaces right next to the action, a full view of the show. On warm evenings (which in this town occur most of the year) the doors are left wide open allowing the sounds to flow out into the massive courtyard at the entrance.
Heading up the venue are Gareth Wilson and Nicol van den Berg, a pair who have worked on the festival programmes for one of South Africa's leading music festivals Oppikoppi for several years. They bring with them a passion for promoting the new and the unusual, a stellar bar team and of course a most desirable black book of contacts. The Good Luck hosts regular gigs, festivals, parties, vinyl fairs and pop-ups and attracts a wide audience with everything from hip hop to heavy metal finding its place on the bill.
Adjoining the Good Luck Bar's warehouse space is a second events venue (aka the Venue Shed, formerly the location of the Joziburg Market) which is available for private functions and within the same precinct you'll as find the 1 Fox Market Shed (open Fri, Sat and Sun) and the spectacular Mad Giant craft brewery.
