IDFA 2018 | Trailer | The Sound of Masks
The Mapiko dance is a traditional masked dance performed solely by the male members of the Makonde community from northern Mozambique. The dance expresses the many mythical, mystical and allegorical stories that are unique to Mozambican culture. In this compelling documentary film storyteller and legendary Mapiko dancer, Atanásio Nhussi takes audiences on a cultural journeyexploring Mozambique's history as told through the context of the influential Mapiko dance, which became a means of resistance during the colonial period and for Nhussi personally provided an opportunity to escape the fighting of Mozambique's wars of independence.
