Throughout August The Melrose Gallery presents an exciting programme of art performances by African contemporary womxn artists. The performances take place inside the gallery where there is also a group art exhibition featuring works by some of the performing artists. Performances are followed by a Q&A with each artist, offering deeper insights into the creative process and the meaning of their work.

Thursday August 1
Performance at 18:00 Jessica Foli - Divine. Feminine. Warrior. A visual and physical exploration of the female form inspired by the historic female warriors of West Africa.
Performance at 19:30 Ulungile Magubane - Mamakhe. An Intensely personal musical piece about nurturing and motherhood, and the unconditional love a mother has for her child.

Thursday August 8
Performance at 18:00 Lebogang Mabusela - Makoti Dreamz presents Old Wives Gunz
Performance at 19:00 Helena Uambembe - My Load I Shall Carry. A moving piece that looks at the normalisation of death and trauma. The performance is followed by a discussion titled 'Performing womanhood in times of trauma'.

Thursday August 15
Performance at 18:00 Bongi Bengu & Monique Mrazek - Spell of the Sensuous. Aiming to "restore beauty harmony and balance" the two artists invite the audience to join in the co-creation of a Mandala (a symbolic gemoetric design that comes from Hindu and Buddhist cultures) made from natural materials.

Thursday August 22
Performance at 18:00 Adejoke Tugbiyele & Banzii Mavuso aka Obie Mavuso - Musician Shows You. Two queer black women explore their upbringing, reflecting on memories of joy and pain in a performance that includes musical renditions sung in isiXhosa and accompanied by ancestral South African instruments.
