The Winston Boutique Hotel

6 Tottenham Ave, Melrose Estate, Johannesburg      +27 11 268 3140     more than a year ago
The Winston is an elegant and super conveniently located boutique hotel choice for a business or leisure visit to Joburg, tucked into charming Melrose and within walking distance of Rosebank’s many restaurants, shopping, and entertainment attractions.

Relish a tasty Middle Eastern-inspired meal (the restaurant here is halaal), sip on a delicious rum cocktail at the bar, or just lounge around in the courtyard as the sun sets — the friendly staff here are eager to offer suggestions on how best to spend your time.

If you are visiting for work we recommend the meeting room with its conference facilities and there's a business desk with a printer at your disposal if needed.

With 30 rooms arranged over two floors, and a lounge and entrance area that runs throughout the ground floor of the main section of the hotel The Winston has a spacious feel, and lots of intimate spaces in which to relax. The hotel offers three courtyard rooms, 20 deluxe rooms, and seven superior rooms, all spacious and each an en suite tub and shower.

The decor of the rooms displays an interesting take on old English charm with an African twist. Walls are adorned with framed black and white pictures and cowhide rugs embellish the floors. The colourful shweshwe gowns in the wardrobes that are proudly locally made are an especially nice touch.

The rooms are welcoming and kitted out with nice-to-haves like a tea and coffee selection, a workstation, and a mini fridge. If you are sharing, feel free to ask for a twin bed set-up or keep the spacious king-sized bed. We recommend the Courtyard rooms with a furnished balcony offering views overlooking the hotel grounds.

The restaurant at The Winston serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Head Chef Asif is highly decorated in the culinary world and was previously based in Dubai, and then spent some time at The Hyatt in Cape Town. On our visit he told us he uses flavours influenced by his global travels including Asian and Indian cuisine. And his signature dish? The Butter Chicken served with slow-cooked buttered chicken, tomato, Indian spices, and nuts.

The large comfortable chairs and white table cloths with vases adorned with fresh buds make this a pared-down yet sophisticated space to dine. There is also an outdoor dining option in a lovely courtyard overlooking the pool and dining space available for private functions.

The bar area is separately owned and operated. A cosy space it offers delicious cocktails (ask for the menu), one of the highlights is the Mavuso, which has a dark rum base.

Conferencing and Events at The Winston
The conference room at The Winston can fit up to 34 guests, arranged in various seating styles to suit any business occasion. There are also many lounge areas, a lobby and breakaway spaces for calls or intimate workshops, and a communal workspace upstairs. All food and drink for business functions is provided by the hotel. For private functions at The Winston such as birthdays, baby showers, intimate dinners or any sort of gatherings, there is the restaurant courtyard available for hire and the fireplace area with long couches and comfy cushions for less formal events. Shisha is also available for hire.

It's important to note that The Winston will undergo a major revamp in October 2022 and will reopen in early 2023 as a luxury Park Hyatt hotel. The revamp will include the addition of a new spa and signature Park Hyatt restaurant in addition to a major decor revamp courtesy to give the hotel a new contemporary feel.
