Ukko

It is an infrequent experience in Johannesburg to find a day/night restaurant where you can enjoy a work lunch or dinner, an afternoon catch-up with the girls, a date night, and a cool cocktail all while getting in beautiful selfies for the gram and eating some excellent fare.

The selfies being gotten for the gram are a feature of Ukko, a popular Bryanston hangout for the glamour set after work hours. Located in Nicholway, Ukko is the fruition of owner Mun Manal’s vision to have a place to come to any time of the day to eat good food. Manal, a seasoned restaurateur, was more specific about it being good home food, but one can only wish that our everyday home food resembled what's on the plate at Ukko. The dishes are far more elevated than what comes out of most kitchens.

Ukko
The soothing space that is Ukko in Bryanston

The name is derived from "Ukkonen", referencing the god of the sky, weather and thunder, we were told, in Finnish mythology. Apparently celebrating a good harvest is also part of this lore... hence Ukko.

The menu cleverly encompasses primarily sushi and small tapas-style plates as the main components, inviting you to leisurely sip a cocktail or glass of wine while you enjoy several taste experiences. We loved the open bar, where you can take a seat at the counter and watch your drink being shaken up. There is a special Gin & Tonic section on the bar menu – with refreshing options that include elderflower and lime, and grapefruit and mint. We recommend Ether on the cocktail list (average prices here are R120) – gin, fresh passion fruit and lemon juice with elderflower, prosecco and aromatic bitters. Ukko also has a large cognac selection, which may hint at the sophistication of who's in the crowd.

A different take on Wagyu at Ukko

The signature Sushi (South African style) dishes are well-thought-out twists on classics. We really enjoyed the Crunch Roll – crispy salmon roll, tempura prawn, avo, cream cheese and yakitori sauce, because Ukko really does crunch well. The crunchy tempura prawns and squid heads were equally a delight.

The seafood really shines at Ukko, another rare Joburg delight. The sesame-crusted seared tuna main with fresh slaw was the overall favourite of the night, served perfectly medium rare, seared and flaky. There are also great vegetarian options like the marinated aubergine, and burrata with sour dough. The killer dish here is a batter-fried full onion that appears at the table, resembling a delicate petalled rose. Meat lovers will enjoy the chicken dumplings, and Wagyu sirloin (there's even a nigiri version).
Ukko cocktail
Cocktail hour at Ukko – is worth staying around for. So many good choices.

The curated menu will provide you with tastes from around the globe, but the atmosphere is uniquely Joburg (otherwise known as vibe). The soundtrack is Dave Brubeck and Sade and as you eat you will hear the distinct sounds of laughter and the buzz of conversation that make a balmy evening out feel a bit magical. The lighting is warm and creates an intimate setting, with straw baskets gently swaying overhead. We usually don't favour eating out in a shopping centre, but Ukko has managed to create something that makes you forget that you're in one.

Ukko already seems to be a favourite – packed even on Monday night – so we recommend booking a table to reserve your spot. We wouldn’t be surprised if more Ukkos pop up around town.
