Walter Voigt: 'Tswalu, A Wilderness Revisited'

Deserts have a special allure; these stark, semi-arid and arid regions have historically drawn both artists and spiritual seekers – and with such otherworldly beauty, it's easy to understand why. The mesmerising Kalahari is no different, as renowned landscape painter Walter Voigt's newest body of work beautifully attests to.

Tswalu, A Wilderness Revisited came together during Voigt's second residency with the Tswalu Kalahari Reserve in the Northern Cape, following his initial visit and subsequent sold-out exhibition. His new paintings capture more of Tswalu's dramatic, ancient wilderness and its particular abundance following a few seasons of good rain in the region. The stately Korannaberg mountains star in many of these works, as do the Kalahari's signature red sand, textured shrubs and moody skies.

The Tswalu Foundation's Artists in Residence Programme began in 2015 as a way to support research on Tswalu and provide artists the opportunity to be inspired by this magical place. It's guided by Everard Read Gallery, thanks to whom Voigt's new paintings are now showing in Johannesburg.

Tswalu, A Wilderness Revisited runs until Wed, Jan 31, 2024. Viewings are by appointment only at Fireblade Aviation, Denel Precinct, Astro Park, Atlas Road, Bonaero Park, Johannesburg. Email gallery@everard.co.za to make arrangements.
