We'd be lying if we said we understood his films (at least the handful we've managed to sit all the way through), but in the relatively short history of filmmaking, there's been no larger artistic shadow cast than that of the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman. And if you've travelled much around Europe this year, you'll surely have seen that there's no larger celebration of a single auteur's life and work than that which is being rolled out to commemorate the centenary of Bergman's birth in 1918. We noticed Bergman 100 posters in at least a half dozen countries over the summer, and this autumn Ljubljana will join the party, with various films being screened at both Kinoteka and Kinodvor in September and October.
