The staging that has proved to be a great hit last season was choreographed by an Italian choreographer, Renato Zanella, who joined forces with theatre and opera director Yulia Kristoforova to bring to the audiences a performance that unifies dance, words and singing into a work of art that erases the distance between the audience and the artist.
You may be asking yourself Who is Maria? As the librettist Horacio Ferer once said: María is Buenos Aires and she is tango.
The ballet follows Maria in all stages of her life, from when she was a child through her adulthood to her death and later her resurrection. A version of herself is narrating the story of Maria through song.
Therefore, María de Buenos Aires is not your typical ballet. The brilliant dancers of the Ljubljana Ballet Ensemble perform alongside amazing singers such as Nuška Drašček, Sara Briški Cirman (Raiven), and Norina Radovan in the role of Maria. This version of Maria is joined on stage by Duende, an actor who helps to guide Maria and the audience through her inner world.
The ballet captures the essence of cabaret nightlife in the streets of Buenos Aires through its Costume and Set Design, and most importantly, with the help of a chamber orchestra led by Marko Hatlak.
