Fort VIII - Grolman

ul. Rumuńska (Grunwald) ,   Grunwald Południe         04 Oct 2023

Situated a stone’s throw away from Lech Poznan’s stadium (although you’d never know unless you were told), this fort has an interesting history. During WWII it was known as Stalag XXI-D and used by the Nazis to house POWs. It’s not clear how many were kept prisoner here but a number of them did escape - most notably British Officer Michael Sinclair, Lieutenant colonel Ronald Littledale and Brigadier Gris Davies-Scourfield who did so in May 1941 in a cart used for disposing garbage. The three were later re-captured and shipped off to Colditz. Incidentally, Officer Sinclair became the only person to be killed whilst trying to escape from the notorious prison. In recent years the fort has been a biker bar, as well as home to a late-night rave up venue, although sadly these are both now gone.
