Trained as a plumber, Marek Dyjak rose out of nowhere to win Kraków’s Student Song Festival, which has been a launchpad for many young musicians. His music is classified as ‘sung poetry’ (poezja śpiewania) - a popular genre in PL, with a long tradition. In Sung Poetry its implied that the lyrics were written separate from the music, and they stand alone with their own literary aura that commands the listener’s attention. Backed by his band of Marek Tarnowski (accordion), Jerzy Małek (trumpet), Michał Jaros (contrabass), Grzegorz Jabłoński (piano) and Mateusz Modrzenewski (percussion), Dyjak has plenty of room to interpret his own songs and classics of the genre against a backdrop of jazz improvisation. Now 40 years old, on Dyjak’s most recent album, First Snow, he returned to those songs that inspired his career and whose power he most believes in.
