Russell Kaplan Auctioneers’ signature Wunderkammer returns for autumn, bringing together an eclectic mix of art, antiques and unexpected curiosities. It’s the kind of auction where a few hundred rand can get you in the door, and a few thousand can land you something truly special.
This is a browsing experience as much as a buying one: artworks by emerging and established names, vintage fashion, collectable books, mid-century furniture, unusual antiques, watches, designer accessories and objects with real provenance. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or simply curious, there’s plenty to catch your eye.

Before placing your bids, Russell Kaplan's Ferndale showroom offers a rare chance to see everything in one place. Kaplan and his team curate the space with care, making it feel less like a traditional auction house and more like stepping into an eccentric, beautifully layered apartment filled with stories. Spread across two floors, the showroom is a destination in its own right, with a dedicated gallery space that gives artworks room to breathe. It’s worth a visit whether you’re planning to bid or just browsing for inspiration.
DAYTIME VIEWINGS: Tue, May 12 – Fri, May 15 from 09:30 – 16:30 and Sat, May 16 from 09:30 – 13:00.
The VIP preview night
The preview evenings are where the auction really comes into focus. We visited on Tue, May 12 – and it delivered. It’s the best way to scout standout pieces before bidding begins – and the atmosphere is half the experience. Plus, we love witnessing the unofficial sport of people mentally moving furniture into their homes.
There’s something about these nights: the people, the pieces, the conversations happening between the shelves of art, antiques and beautifully strange objects. You go to browse and inevitably leave with a new obsession.
Among this season's sale, standout pieces are already drawing attention – including a bicycle designed by Sophie Mahlangu and a near-complete set of Salvador Dalí illustrations.
Friends of JIYP were on the ground too: Ricci-Lee Kalish aka @bigbadwolf_sa spoke to guests about the fashion pieces up for auction and their most striking fashion takes, while @garrethdavid aka Mr Decorex compiled his own must-have shortlist from the floor.
