Jarosław Modzelewski. A Country on the Vistula River

Jan 21 - Apr 24 2022       ul. Jazdów 2

This overview of several decades of work by contemporary Warsaw painter Jarosław Modzelewski is not organised chronologically, but rather focused on recurring themes and motifs - foremost among them, the Vistula River (Wisła). The subject of many of Modzelewski's paintings over the years, the Vistula becomes the through-line of the artist's career, linking formally distinctive periods of his work, just as it is the geographic through-line of his motherland, linking people from all different regions of the country. The Vistula is revealed as a symbol of Polish identity not through the depiction of significant or solemn historical events, but rather as a small context-building detail to the ordinary activities and landscapes of everyday life in PL.
