A favourite of urban adventurers and adventurers, the historic Warsaw Gasworks in Wola is known for its two huge red-brick former gas tanks visible from the train on your way into Warsaw. Although those former ruins are now in the hands of a private investor, being renovated and currently off-limits, the large complex they belong to makes for a fascinating visit. Built in the late 19th century, the Wola Gasworks was a modern cutting-edge facility that provided all of Warsaw's gas during the interwar period. Bombed during WWII, the facility reopened in 1950 and has been evolving with new technologies and materials to meet Warsaw's energy needs ever since.

Today part of these historic facilities have been turned into a hands-on, multimedia museum that takes you through the history of energy production from early gas lighting to the modern era of natural gas. Housed in beautifully restored buildings, you'll see plenty of original equipment and artefacts, learn the history of the gasworks and the people that worked there, and also all about the museum's patron, Polish hero Ignacy Łukasiewicz - inventor of the first gas lamp. More fascinating than it sounds, this is a good one for lovers of industrial architecture and technical heritage sites. Workshops for all ages and guided tours are offered regularly, but visits are timed and only available on certain days, so check their website and plan your visit in advance.
