Whether as an ornament, memento, status symbol or work of art – jewellery was one of the first forms of expression known to man and has always been a key component of all cultures. Jewellery is made from a wide variety of materials depending on the era, fashion or function, ranging from natural materials like shells and animal bones to gemstones, metals and plastics. The exhibition Jewellery. materials craft art presents materials and crafts along with the core themes in jewellery such as love, rebellion and tradition that always create a link with the wearer. There is also a section dedicated to 20th-century jewellery, which illustrates how jewellery is being rediscovered as a form of artistic expression: it features items from the Art Nouveau movement and contemporary jewellery artists such as Johanna Dahm and Bernhard Schobinger.
