Where to shop in Joburg – September 2025

03 Sep 2025
Whether you’re a thrifter, collector, or designer-label enthusiast, you can be sure there is something new for you somewhere in Joburg. Every month we scout out shopping hotspots, pop-ups, and the latest labels that may not yet be on your radar...

September is serving heritage with a twist from Thebe Magugu’s Mafeteng drop to Thabiso Musi’s Pick n Pay Clothing collab. Spring fever is in the air, too, bringing markets in full bloom and custom denim and individuality at Levi’s new Rosebank Tailor Shop. And since it’s also Tourism Month, why not wander through SANBI's National Botanical Gardens with 25% off annual membership to sweeten the deal?

Tradition meets power dressing in Thebe Magugu’s Mafeteng styles

September is Heritage Month in South Africa, and designer Thebe Magugu pens a love letter to lineage with a sporty twist. The Mafeteng women’s dress and Mafeteng men’s compression top reimagine Sotho heritage through a contemporary lens. Named after the Lesotho city where the Magugu family hails from, the dress elongates and slims the silhouette with elegant lines and traditional Sotho motifs, finished with athletic touches like a rubberised “Magugu” tag and sleek nylon zip. The compression top echoes this energy, fusing tradition with modern power dressing. Available from Wed, Sep 10, 2025 at Magugu House in Dunkeld and online at thebemagugu.com.

From Jeppe to the world: Tanya Zack’s portrait of Joburg

Inside the colourful world of Jeppe highlighted in the book, The Chaos Precinct: Johannesburg as a port, by Tanya Zack . Photo: Mark Lewis.

On our reading radar, The Chaos Precinct: Johannesburg as a port is a new book by writer and urban planner Tanya Zack. Fifteen years in the making, The Chaos Precinct is the culmination of  Zack’s ongoing visits to Jeppe, with its tightly packed shops and frenzied flow of shoppers. In the book, she explores the characters and dynamics that define this space, tracing the routes of trade and migration that radiate from this bustling hub. In doing so, Zack not only captures what Joburg is today, but also gestures towards the possibilities of what it might become. You can order your copy online and read our full review here.

Designed with four remarkable South African women – actress Zikhona Sodlaka, broadcaster Penny Lebyane, publicist Lerato Sengadi, and broadcaster-presenter Pabi Moloi – each piece does more than turn heads; it turns profits into purpose. The collection features dresses in a variety of silhouettes with custom prints showcasing images of real women who were victims of femicide and violence.
