Diale is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose work is lush with colour and explores race, gender, sexuality and spirituality. Within the body of work presented, Diale "captures the notion that certain patterns, behaviours, or characteristics tend to repeat across different generations". Her artworks are a form of self reflection, and her vibrant compositions evoke a sense of spirituality. The pot motif in her work represents a vessel in which to carry prayers and meaning. Beautiful and evocative work.
Makwakwa is a storyteller. Writing about Makwakwa in Twyg magazine, Jackie May says: "Tinyiko Makwakwa is a maker. The 37-year-old (2022), who grew up in Tzaneen, Limpopo, rejects other labels. She likes the freedom of not being defined. Language is too limiting, she says. She is not a designer. Nor a textile artist. She likes to be left to make… and with this freedom she sometimes creates textiles, sometimes art, sometimes colour."
Bordering on the surreal, Khumalo, hailing from Sebokeng, plays with pattern, deep colour, and the duality between the physical and the spiritual. Her figures are almost mythical and the composition is striking.
Take time to explore the three exhibitions and the intersections between them. These launches are also a great opportunity to engage with Joburg's artists and learn more about their practice.
