The programme, presented as a Fringe platform, is curated by choreographer and director Lesego van Niekerk who has drawn inspiration from Joburg’s diverse dance companies, choreographers, artists, and organisations to present a rich array of performances that celebrate dance produced right here in Joburg.
If you missed Joburg Ballet’s season opening of SCARCITY (read our #MyJoburg interview with Joburg Ballet CEO Elroy Fillis-Bell) you can catch the ballet's Cragi Pedro’s Ukukhanya Kwenyanga: A Moonlight Waltz alongside Thamsanqa Tshabalala’s Petticoat Princess and Evelyn, which is choreographed and performed by Smangaliso Ngwenya. From Newtown-based dance institution Moving into Dance, audiences can look forward to Sunnyboy Motau’s Umthombo and Sylvia Glasser’s Baobab.
The beauty of JOBURG MOVES is that it acts as an inclusive platform for diverse forms of dance that speak to an intergenerational audience. The dance showcase is staged to cultivate a rich dance environment in Joburg that is unlimited by boundaries and bursting with creativity.
As van Niekerk says, “Active engagement and audience building is essential for the dance and theatre sector to flourish in South Africa. JOBURG MOVES aims to do just that by fostering a sense of community, collaboration, and collective participation. Moreover, this platform will introduce existing audiences to new dimensions and avenues of Johannesburg dance, enriching their overall cultural experience.”
On top of the dance offering, dance enthusiasts can also look forward to a dance photography exhibition by David April, masterclasses, and panel discussions.
