Johannesburg

Metered taxis

more than a year ago
Taxis in Johannesburg are expensive but essential if you plan a wild night out. Except for outside hotels, there are very few places where you can hail a taxi in the street. It is best to call and book in advance. Many taxis do not use meters, so arrange a price at the start of your trip. From Sandton City to Parkhurst or Greenside, expect to pay around R150. Note that many South Africans refer to the ubiquitous mini-buses that plow up and down the city's roads ferrying commuters as 'taxis'. These are in fact public buses and are not to be confused with usual taxi cabs.

The following taxi companies run on meters:
Orange Taxis 0861 700 222 or +27 76 205 8031 www.orangecab.co.za
Quick Cab +27 76 043 3617 or +27 73 447 2595
Zebra Cabs 0861 105 105, www.zebracabs.co.za

If you have a smart phone and access to data or wifi then definitely consider signing up to the taxi app Uber. Uber has been a great success since it launched in Joburg in 2014 and has particularly competitive pricing. Generally in most areas of the city you won't wait more than 5minutes for an Uber taxi, and if you are at a major mall or entertainment area the waiting time will be even less. First time users should sign up with our special uber promo code JHBINYOURPOCKET for R120 off your first ride.
