South African university choirs on the Joburg stage

Founded in 2005 by students outside of the music faculty, the UJ Choir has carried the country’s voice to Austria, Germany, and New York. Their performances often reflect both the challenges and hopes of South Africa while winning recognition abroad. "This biennial gathering of northern university choirs is a highlight in our events," says UJ choirmaster Sizwe Mondlane. "And to host it in the time that UJ celebrates two decades makes it that much more of a special occasion, above gathering with our friends in music that have, in many ways, journeyed with us."
UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA
The UP Camerata are fresh off a tour in the United States that included Times Square and a debut at the American Choral Directors Association National Conference. Interim conductor Renette Bouwer brings 25 years of expertise that continues to shape the choir’s growth.
NORTH WEST UNIVERSITY
Under the direction of Kobus Venter since 2012, the NWU PUK Choir has earned World Choir Games gold medals, a South African Music Award, and international prizes in Prague. Their approach combines technical skill with emotional resonance.
UNIVERSITY OF THE FREE STATE
The UFS Bloemfontein Choir, established in 1966, is led by Werner Stander and Frelét de Villiers. It remains central to Kovsie culture and has earned gold medals at the European Choir Games while nurturing new generations of singers.
