August House Open Studio Day

Sunday Oct 6 10:30–16:00       76 End St, Doornfontein
August House is an Art Deco-era building in downtown Joburg that is home to the studios of dozens of exciting contemporary artists from all over Africa. This October the pan-African artist collective hosts an open day and group exhibition featuring the works of 50 artists who all have studio spaces in the building.

August House has been a creative hub for many years, having been home to the artist studios of some of the biggest names in South African contemporary art including Nelson Makamo (whose work recently featured on the cover of Time magazine) and Mary Sibande. The building isn't usually open to the wider public, making their lively open day events a unique opportunity to meet with the artists, engage with their work, learn more about the creative process and buy artworks directly from the artists themselves.

Exciting artists to look out for at the upcoming August House open day exhibition include visual artist Odette Graskie, who works with textile and sculptures, and Nigerian-born impressionist Solomon Omogboye who seeks to illustrate the beauty, joy, and hope he sees in everyday existence through his works. Also resident is rising star artist Vusi Beauchamp whose politically-charged works use satire and humour to critique South Africa’s socio-political landscape and energetic young printmakers like Lindo Zwane, Sizwe Khoza and Ben Ngobeni.
