Africa's biggest hip hop and street culture festival, this event previously attracted up to 20 000 people to Newtown. Previous festivals were held on Freedom Day in April but this year's Back to the City Festival is a spring affair.

Expect live stages spread across Mary Fitzgerald Square in downtown Joburg, with well-known MCs, beat boxers, rappers and dancers performing throughout the day. There are usually also basketball courts, skating ramps, graffiti areas and a market selling cool T-shirts, caps and customised T-shirts. This year's Back to the City programme boasts more than 100 artists local and international artists, 60 stalls and various activities to enjoy. The focus will be on celebrating 50 years of Hip Hop and 40 years of South African Hip Hop. The line-up includes Kwesta, A-Reece, 25K, Big Zulu, Nadia Nakai, Cashless Society, Priddy Ugly and so many more local and international acts.
