Barbara Wildenboer - Eros / Thanatos

Nov 15 - Jan 10 2019       6 Jellicoe Ave, Rosebank
Referencing Sigmund Freud's seminal work Civilization and its Discontents, in her new exhibition Eros / Thanatos, Barbara Wildenboer uses collage to draw from her own dreams, anxieties and personal narratives, musing on modern human life and the fragility of our relationship with the natural world.

In her collages Wildenboer use images and material from a variety of sources including natural history books, old war magazines and art journals to create intriguing, delicately constructed works that are filled with a mix of contemporary, personal and mythological references. The result is a thought-provoking meditation on the lessons we can learn from ancient history and the warnings we need to listen to from the environment.

Also showing at the gallery simultaneously is an exhibition by Poland-born and Germany-based painter Andrezej Urbanski. Urbanski focuses his paintbrush on the abstract, constructing beautifully formed geometric works and experimenting with the layering of bold colours and flat shapes to create complex images that almost seem to be moving effortlessly across the canvas.

Opening event Thu Nov 15 at 18:30.
