The show follows Charlotte, a young dreamer who leaves her rural home for the big city, confronting fear and temptation along the way. “Sometimes the dream itself becomes the scariest part,” says Gert-Johan Coetzee. Set in a surreal world of doors that symbolise the choices in life – whether to remain where you are or to step into the unknown – Behind the Crimson Door is a celebration of possibility.
“When you find the courage to move forward and go after what you truly want, the world has a way of opening doors,” says Coetzee. “Fear may stand on one side, but courage allows you to walk through it.”
Coetzee’s spring/summer 2027 collection adorns The Cirk’s eight highly talented aerialists, dancers and performers, creating an interactive showcase for his garments as they evolve with the story: from humble simplicity to bold spectacle. Designed specifically to accommodate aerial acts and physical performance, the couture pieces blur the boundaries between fashion, theatre and live art.
If you're a fan of The Cirk, you don't want to miss this. And for first-timers, it's going to be a production like no other. "We're bringing lots of new elements to the stage," says The Cirk co-owner Joanna Pawelczyk. Behind the Crimson Door features live vocals by Danica Bezuidenhout and original choreography.
