From modern dance to classic ballet, comedy theatre to South African dramatic classics, you'll find something for everyone in Johannesburg's theatres. The historic Market Theatre is the place to go if you want to see major South African drama theatre while the Auto & General Theatre on the Square is also well-known for its local productions. Montecasino's two theatres regularly attract international theatre and musical productions, as does the large Joburg Theatre, which is particularly notable for its regular ballet and dance productions.

Kids are well catered for at the National Children's Theatre, and the relative newcomer Soweto Theatre is already making a name for itself by staging new productions by local and international playwrights.
