Blessing Ngobeni - Study Song of Chicotte

Jan 18 - Feb 20 2020       6 Jellicoe Ave, Rosebank
share
Blessing Ngobeni's thought-provoking works typically explore the intertwined realities from the past and present, looking at humanity's seemingly perpetual urges towards chaos, violence and destruction. Four years after its 2016 debut Ngobeni revisits his painting exhibition Song of Chicotte, which referenced the chicotte, a kind of whip made from hippopotamus hide that was used in the Congo during the reign of Belgium's King Leopold to oppress, punish and kill scores of Congolese people during the brutal and horrific years of colonial rule.

In this new exhibition titled Study Song of Chicotte, Ngobeni presents hand-coloured linocuts that reference the same themes of slavery and the perpetuation of inherited patterns of mental and physical oppression as the bold 2016 exhibition.

Sat Jan 18 from 10:00: Opening event and walkabout with the artist.
