Bronwen Findlay - Painting Hokusai and Other Worlds
Feb 22 - Mar 31 2018
6 Jellicoe Ave, Rosebank
Reinterpreting the exquisite works of 19th century Japanese artist, painter and printmaker Hokusai Katsushika, Findlay explores the physicality of oil paint, manipulating the medium through its lustre and layers of colour.
Despite using different scales and processes, Findlay’s paintings incorporate Hokusai’s signature flowers, birds and landscapes to create intimate works which are indelibly marked by her own experiences. Findlay says of her process “I try to find beauty in things which might seem insignificant or not of great importance, the ordinary or every day. I have painted domestic objects which may be loaded with cultural connotations – a willow-patterned piece of crockery from my grandmother, enamel tin plates and mugs bought from trading stores.”
