Saturday Oct 21 14:00–17:00       Prince of Wales Terrace (cnr Carse O'Gowrie Rd), Parktown

The suburb of Modderfontein was established in 1894 and owes its origins to the discovery of gold, and more specifically the need to manufacture dynamite (the factory needed to be built far away enough from the growing city to quell the community’s fears about the manufacture of explosives). Modderfontein's first communities were filled with immigrants from across Europe who named the streets and villages in the area after their homelands.

Much of Modderfontein's original turn-of-the-century architecture still survives today and this tour stops at many of the area's most notable historic landmarks such as The Modderfontein Dynamite Company Museum, the first factory manager’s house - Franz Hoenig Haus which was built in 1896, the site of the old casino built in 1897 and 33 High Street, a building constructed in 1897 which now houses a restaurant and brewery. Other stops include Modderfontein cemetery.

Bring your cameras along as this route is also filled with beautiful mature jacaranda trees that should be in full bloom.

The tour last approximately four hours. Booking is essential.
