When was the last time you went to the theatre and saw someone performing live, in the flesh? Probably quite a long time ago right?! Well, the exciting news is live performance is finally returning to Joburg, and spring at Joburg Theatre kicks off with a very special evening of opera with the Cantiamo – Mzansi Opera Celebration.

Catch the performance, live in the theatre on Thursday October 23 and Friday October 24. 

Cantiamo sees the internationally-renowned voices of South African opera singers Kimmy Skota, Kelebogile Besong, Thesele Kemane and Phenye Modiane, with Paul Ferreira on piano, joined on stage by the Vivacious Sounds Choir. The evening's programme is a wide-ranging showcase of some of the most beloved and recognizable opera works including music from Bellini’s I Puritani, Mozart’s Don Giovanni and Verdi’s La Traviata as well as excerpts from South African operas including Phelelani Mnomiya’s Ziyankomo and the Forbidden Fruit and Mzilikazi Khumalo’s Princess Magogo.

A celebration of thrilling South African operatic talent, this is a great opportunity to get back in the theatre, albeit with new Covid-19 protocols in place (meaning the theatre is not allowed to be full). If you can't catch the performance live in the theatre you can also stream it on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October.
