Cion by Gregory Maqoma
Multi-award-winning choreographer Gregory Maqoma, one of the leading names in contemporary African dance, brings back to the stage Cion, one of his most memorable productions. Maqoma is known for his innovative, exciting and visually stunning productions and this new work, which premiered in 2017, is particularly special.

The performance is inspired by Zakes Mda's seminal 1995 novel Ways of Dying and its sequel Cion, that follow the life of Toloki, a 'professional mourner' at township funerals during South Africa’s transition to democracy. Maqoma plays the lead role of Toloki and is joined on stage by dancers from the Vuyani Dance Company and a traditional isicathamiya choir. Meanwhile, the sets are designed by celebrated contemporary artist Mohau Modisakeng.

For this series of performances, Maqoma and the Vuyani Dance Company are joined by the Soweto Gospel Choir.

A must-see!
