Friday Oct 6 - Saturday Oct 28

His first solo show in a decade, visual artist and animator Diek Grobler's Déjà Vu is a collection of gouache and mixed media paintings, pinscreen drawings and animated film frames now showing at the Association of Arts Pretoria. With a career spanning 35 years, this idiosyncratic artist has worked in myriad mediums from sculpture to performance and painting. Over the last 10 years, however, his practice has centred primarily on film animation.

The exhibition's title alludes to Grobler's revisitation of motifs that have been appearing in his work for decades; namely paper boats and paper planes. His narratives are seldom linear, yet feel familiar thanks to fragments from myths, fairly tales and Bible stories. The dreamlike compositions of his paintings call to mind the work of René Magritte. In terms of animation, the exhibition showcases stills from his most recent film, Laaste Woord

Déjà Vu runs until Sat, Oct 28 in the North Gallery of the Association of Arts Pretoria, 173 Mackie Street, Nieuw Muckleneuk, Pretoria. The gallery operates from Tue–Fri, 09:00–17:00 and Sat from 09:00–13:00.
