Eat! on Keyes

Part of the Capsicum Culinary Studio and The Private Hotel School in Rosebank (one of the biggest hotel and catering schools in the country), Eat! on Keyes is a quiet cafe in a lesser-known corner of busy Rosebank that offers Capsicum's students the essential real-life experience of working in a café while they learn the tools of the culinary trade. The bonus for diners is that given that this is essentially a 'test kitchen' the prices are low and you'll be hard-pressed to find a better-value breakfast this side of the city.

Open from 07:00 until 15:00 for breakfast and lunch, Eat! on Keyes' breakfast options are priced from just R25 to R50 and the light lunches, which include an array of open sandwiches, salads and wraps, are all priced between R40 and R80. While you'll always find a filling full English on the breakfast menu, the café consciously steers towards offering as many healthy and light options as possible and seasonally changing menus are promised, giving the students more opportunity to get creative.

Getting the basics right is key to any culinary career and happily enough these students know how to cook an egg to perfection. We can highly recommend the omelette, which is an absolute steal at R40, and the Benedict poached eggs. When it comes to plating Eat on Keyes gets A for effort for devoting attention to styling even the most simple dish.  This is not a café to escape to for atmosphere or quirky style, it's the kind of place that people who stay away from hipster coffee joints precisely because they don't find those sometimes cooler-than-you unsmiling barristas apealling, will enjoy.

Heading up the kitchen and keeping the budding young student chefs in line is Tyrone Kleynhans, a former DJ and ex-Capsicum student himself who previously worked at The Palazzo at Montecasino before joining Capsicum to launch their new cafe, so you can rest assured that while the chefs get to learn, you'll always be eating timely and well too.

Aside from providing excellent value the cafe's other winning element is Capsicum's tree-filled gardens that sit just outside the door. In a rapidly expanding neighbourhood that has precious few green spaces, this little pocket of green space with its lovingly tended lawns and mature trees is a lovely hidden surprise.
