Location The province of Gauteng, one of nine South African provinces.

Economic clout The financial heart of South Africa and the economic powerhouse of sub-Saharan Africa. Gauteng province contributes 34.7% of the country’s gross domestic product.

Stock exchange The Johannesburg Stock Exchange in Sandton is the largest stock exchange on the continent and one of the 20 biggest bourses in the world.

Financial heart Home to the headquarters of more than 70% of South African companies.

Population More than four million people live in and around the city, and 42% of them are younger than 24.

Diversity The 2011 census recorded that 76,4% of Joburg's population are black African, 12,3% are white people, 5,6% are coloured people, and 4,9% are Indian/Asian. Of those 19,2% have some form of higher education, and 2.9% of those aged 20 years and older have no form of schooling.

Inland port Has one of the larger inland ports in the world at the City Deep freight terminal.

Green city One of the world’s largest urban forests, with around six million trees.

Elevation More than 1700 metres above sea level so the kettle boils here at 96°C.
