This complex new one-woman play written by local playwright Myer Taub has been described by critics as a 'love it or hate it' kind of work that promises to provoke much debate about the nature of theatre as well as the positions of heritage and art in contemporary Joburg.

The play begins with a disgruntled actress meeting with a local theatre maker to discuss a new play about the ghost of Florence Phillips (1863-1940), the fabulously wealthy socialite, art collector and philanthropist who founded the Johannesburg Art Gallery and who the playwright plans to position in present-day Joburg, haunting the neglected park that surrounds the fences shielding the art gallery.

The meeting sets the actress into thought about what it would mean to play a dead white colonial figure whose legacy is both contested and forgotten and the play then sets off across time circling through Joburg's last century with Leila Henriques bringing to the stage a unique vision of the eccentric Florence and how she may have viewed the city, 'her' gallery and her place in the Joburg story.

Director Greg Homann described the play to Business Day as "contradictory, complex and messy" which he says is the key to the work and the issues that it tries to discuss; "we’re dealing with memory and how we think of time — moving forward and backwards".
