In Footnotes, a new group exhibition curated by Musa Nxumalo, owner of Studio Nxumalo, Nxumalo has selected independent artists, drawn to them because of the ways in which they have managed to push and continue their careers as artists in spite of being excluded from art fairs, festivals and exhibitions due to their independence.
The exhibition ties in with Studio Nxumalo's aims of creating a more sustainable art ecosystem where smaller artists are able to continue working and find space to sell and exhibit their work. Nxumalo says, "Footnotes is the prelude to a long-term investigation and discussion of how the lack of inclusion of independent artists' work on established art platforms is detrimental to the growth of independent practices within the arts. The lack of visibility on established platforms places independent practitioners in a vulnerable position, which undermines their cultural contributions and value within the broader visual arts landscape."
Footnotes will be Studio Nxumalo's final exhibition of 2023 with the team taking a year-long research break to foster ties with institutions holding similar interests as they plan how to grow and innovate within South Africa's art scene.
