Going outdoors – exploring Ground The Venue in Muldersdrift

18 Oct 2024
Within the scenic beauty of Muldersdrift lies Ground The Venue, a farm destination owned by the Cronjé family and passionately managed by the Cronjé progeny and their spouses. Ground is a testament to the power of relationships and family, and this elegant outdoor space offers a warm and welcoming environment, perfect for a day trip from Joburg. We were invited to spend the day there recently (June 2024) and got a chance to explore the property.

Ground brims with adventure and possibilities, offering an array of activities tailored to suit many tastes and occasions. From picturesque picnics to elegant weddings, themed dining experiences, a charming café, a restaurant, a market setting, and scenic hiking trails, there's something for everyone. We've put together a little itinerary to help you navigate Ground and make the most of your visit.

Picnics at Ground

Whether you're a DIY picnic pro or prefer a touch of luxury, Ground caters to you. You can book your spot for weekends, with packages tailored to groups of up to 10 people. Choose from a range of options, from bringing your own cushions, cutlery, crockery, and any other picnic essentials (picnic food boxes and drinks must be ordered). Or you may choose to indulge in curated experiences like the Boschendal Picnic or the Bougie Boho picnic set-up. These packages come complete with blankets, picnic boxes brimming with delicious treats, and sometimes even a bottle of Boschendal Bubbles to add that extra sparkle to your day.

At Ground, picnic dining is elevated into an adventure with a variety of themed experiences. The Harvest experience allows for dining al fresco in Ground's lush veggie garden under the shade, surrounded by stylish décor. With a welcome drink and a three-course feast, you'll find you're ready to settle into a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. The Boschendal Experience is a more private dining option that includes a bar and a dedicated barman, providing a refined and exclusive setting for more sophisticated gatherings.

For a safari-inspired adventure, the Bush Experience takes you to the forest with a harvest table laden with traditional dishes like braai meats and local treats. The La Dolci Vita Experience embraces the Italian way of life with a festive, communal dining atmosphere. Enjoy a beautifully styled long table and a three-course Italian meal.

The menu features freshly prepared meals alongside a delightful selection from the deli table. Ground Café caters to both planned outings and spontaneous visits, but reservations ensure a guaranteed table while leaving plenty of space for walk-ins to join in on the fun.

This is a tastefully curated space with white walls reminiscent of the Mediterranean. Come around for tapas, small plates, and drink pairings. The seasonal menu and variety of drink options encourage sharing and tasting over long lunches with friends looking to celebrate special occasions.

The Ground market

Ground's market is a great addition to any Sunday agenda. It runs monthly during winter when the wedding season is less busy. With plenty of lifestyle and food vendors, alongside fresh seasonal produce and live music, it promises a full-day outing with a community vibe. Whether you're browsing the stalls for unique finds, indulging in delicious meals, or tapping your feet to live music, this market offers a wholesome experience that celebrates local talent and fosters a sense of togetherness. Keep an eye on their social pages for announcements of upcoming markets.

Hiking trails

If you're seeking an adventure in Muldersdrift, take your pick of hiking trails. With marked walking or running trails meandering through the mountainous terrain, ranging from four to nine kilometres, there's something for every level of hiker. There's also the option for a pram-friendly route (Thule and Active prams), so even the littlest adventurers can join in the fun. You can also bring your fur family as dogs are allowed. While the trails aren't guided, fear not; markers and arrows will guide your way, and upon arrival, you'll find a handy map to plan your route. Payment for hikes can be made at the hiking station, except for option 2 and Friday Feels, which require pre-booking online for catering purposes.
