Group exhibition: 'Voices of Strength' at Origin Art
Thursday Aug 1 - Friday Aug 30
19 Keyes Avenue, Rosebank
See new work from emerging contemporary South African photographers, painters, ceramicists, and mixed-media practitioners in Origin Art's exhibition for Women's Month, Voices of Strength. "This exhibition celebrates the resilience, empowerment, and beauty of women, presenting a tapestry of narratives that are both personal and universal," reads the curatorial statement.
Photographer Busiswa Mazwana's dreamy, imaginative images capture the delicate beauty of life, while Tarien Engelbrecht explores nostalgic memories through glitch painting techniques. In her mixed-media work, Buqaqawuli Nobakada deconstructs the historically sexualised connotations of lace, reclaiming it as a symbol of hyper-femininity that embodies strength rather than objectification.
Michelle Viljoen's work is a quest for connection. She bridges the tangible and intangible through documentary and street photography, while her paintings reflect the emotional landscapes she encounters. Ceramic artist Siphokazi Mlangeni explores themes surrounding female sexuality, questioning practices like 'virginity testing'. Through painting, textiles, and drawing, Chuma Adam considers visibility and self-actualisation as a black woman.
