Hartbeespoort is a tiny town embraced by the Witwatersberg and the Magaliesberg mountains. Less than an hour's drive from Joburg, it's an ideal spot for a weekend away. Every spring Hartbeespoort hosts the quirky Hartiwood Food and Film Show at Pretville, a former movie set that was created in 2012 to resemble a 1950s main street, complete with antique cars, a milkshake serving diner and a bioscope with velvet chairs and a fully functional 16mm vintage projector.

The Hartiwood Food and Film Show is unique culinary night market mixing food, wine, music and film. Visitors to the food market can look forward to a deliciously diverse selection of edible and quaffable treats. Look out for Sonel Venter’s Tostatos bakery stall and heritage eats like blissful baobab ice cream by Tracy Nelwamondo and local farmer Mike Crewe Brown’s indigenous Pedi sheep barbeque. There are also startlingly strong samosas, soothing pap, potjies and morog and a selection of fantastic food trucks. Sweet tooth types will love trying the best macaroons, cupcakes and classic koeksisters while drinks options include Black Horse craft beer, botanical infused gins, a range of local mampoers and cocktails.

Entertainment for the evening includes live music from Peter Hoven, Jacqueline Tolken and Machiel Roets, Latino dancing, puppetry and film screenings (in English and Afrikaans) at the Pretville Bioscope.
