Hot lineup of Madala Kunene, The Brother Moves On and Guy Buttery at The Nest
Saturday Apr 22 18:00–01:00
39 Voorhout Street, New Doornfontein, Johannesburg,
The evening kicks off with the father of South African guitar playing. Madala Kunene, who was born in Kwa-Mashu near Durban and began busking on the Durban beachfront at the age of seven. Madala Kunene has graced international stages presenting the purity of the acoustic South African guitar sound. Next up is Standard Bank Young Artist Award winner Guy Buttery, cited as “one of South Africa’s most influential artists over the past decade" by The Sunday Independent. His distinctive acoustic guitar style is influenced by traditional South African culture, music and instrumentation.
Ending off the evening is Brother Moves On. These musicians sold out at their Berlin Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival and the prestigious Brussels Flagey in November 2022. The band have just released a ten-track sophomore album entitled "S/he Who Feeds You" on Native Rebels Recordings (UK) to rave reviews worldwide. The album features a track that tributes Madala Kunene entitled "Ta Tom" and Shabaka Hutchings has remixed this track due for release on Apr 21.
This is the beginning of a recording and touring process between this group of artists - one of the highlights will be seeing all of them share the stage at The Nest.
