The historic Johannesburg Observatory occupies the highest point in Joburg, perched high atop Observatory ridge, and commands magnificent views over the city (and the cosmos of course) and is in itself an architectural treasure. For anybody looking for Joburg's blooming jacarandas this is a great tour as the suburbs which surround the Observatory ridge are filled with these beautiful purple blossoming trees.

Join Monique Jefferson McDonald and architectural conservation expert Prof. Katherine Munro from the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation on this unique tour of the historic observatory. The tour includes a visit to the three buildings designed by the acclaimed Herbert Baker (who also designed the Union Buildings) that form part of the site, the SAIEE (South African Institute of Electrical Engineers) Museum and the observatory's telescope room.

The tour then takes a stroll down Urania Road to admire some of the beautiful mansions built during the neighbourhood’s early 20th Century heyday and ends back at the Observatory where refreshments are on sale.

The tour lasts approximately three hours. Booking is essential.
