Celebrating the Johannesburg Zoo’s 114th birthday, every Saturday and Sunday for the month of March the Zoo hosts a special Heritage Tour. The two-hour walking tour meanders through the zoo’s shady paths retracing the zoo's colourful history. The tour makes stops at several historical and contemporary landmarks along the way including the statue of Max, the heroic crime fighting gorilla who tackled a pair of robbers, and ends at the zoo's old tearoom which has been transformed into an education centre.

The heritage tour leaves every Sat and Sun at 15:00 and costs R90 (price includes zoo entrance). Booking is essential. Call +27 11 646 2000 to book.
