South African photographer Jodi Bieber first came under the international spotlight for her portrait of Aisha Mohammadzai, an Afghan woman whose ears and nose were severed by her husband and brother-in-law, which graced the cover of the Times magazine and won her the 2010 World Press Photo of the Year. A Market Photo Workshop alumni, Bieber studied under renowned South African photographer and member of the Bang Bang Club Ken Oosterbroek and began her career at the advent of South Africa’s democracy. She says that it was “only by great fortune that I found photography and with it a vehicle to explore my country.”

Her mid-career exhibition Between Darkness and Light opened in 2011 at the Goodman Gallery to critical acclaim, and featured a selection of her works taken between 1993 and 2004. The exhibition was published as a book by prestigious Swiss art books publisher Skira in 2017, following on from her 1996 book Between Dogs and Wolves - Growing up with South Africa, 2010's Soweto and 2014's Real Beauty. This exhibition focuses on works included in the book and also features some of Bieber’ lesser-known images, including photos from the Women Who Murdered their Husbands series.

Opening event Thu Nov 1 at 18:00.
