Home to some of the earliest suburban architecture in Joburg, such as the elegant Byeways House which was designed in 1912 by Baker and Fleming, it was also the scene of a high-profile raid by the Apartheid government on a gay party, which led to the passing of the Immorality Amendment Bill of 1967.

From 10:30-13:00. Killarney Walking Tour
Home to both the first film studio in South Africa, and Joburg’s first shopping mall, the 43-hectare suburb of Killarney was originally designed by New York-born insurance, real estate and finance tycoon Isidore W. Schlesinger. Schlesinger imagined the suburb as a quiet area, dominated by parkland with New York style apartment blocks. Oozing genteel charm with some beautiful Art Deco buildings, Killarney retains some of Joburg’s finest art deco architecture.

From 11:00-14:00. Emoyeni to Villa Arcadia Walking Tour
Starting at the Renaissance-style mansion Emoyeni, designed by pioneering Joburg architects Leck and Emley in 1905, this walking tour travels the historic Jubilee Road with its incredible views and numerous interesting heritage buildings. Stops include The Church of the Latter Day Saints and Savernake, another home designed by Leck and Emley in 1904. The tour ends at the gorgeous Herbert Baker-designed Villa Arcadia. Built in 1909 for art collectors Lionel and Florence Philips, Villa Arcadia is currently the home of Hollard’s contemporary art collection.

From 12:00-14:30. The View House Tour
Parktown’s oldest surviving mansion, The View, was built in 1897 by architect and then Joburg city engineer Charles Aburrow for diamond magnate Sir Thomas Cullinan. It is now home to the Transvaal Scottish, a reserve regiment formed by the Marquis of Tullibardine John Murray. This tour takes in the building's beautifully restored interiors, which have been transformed into a museum filled with items belonging to the Transvaal Scottish regiment.

From 14:00-15:00. In the Attic Classroom Children’s Tour
On this special children's tour, the little ones have the chance to travel back in time and learn about history in an interactive way. The tour is hosted in an Edwardian attic classroom where kids can experience what it was like to be in school 100 years ago.

From 14:45-17:00. The Rand Club Walking Tour
Admire the impressive architecture of downtown Joburg's historic mining district and step back in time on a visit to the iconic Rand Club. Founded in 1887 as a colonial-style members-only club, the Rand Club’s opulent interiors have been lovingly preserved. Steal the chance to admire the beautiful entrance hall with its impressive stained-glass dome and grand staircase and end the tour with a drink at the vast mahogany-panelled bar (said to be the longest in Africa) where beer is still served in tankards.

From 15:30-16:30. African Jim Film Screening
South Africa’s first film with a fully African cast. Described as “the first film to express the black experience in the city of Gold”, African Jim stars iconic South African musician and actress Dolly Rathebe and Daniel Adnewmah (also known for his role in the film Cry, My Beloved Country).
Sunday October 1
From 09:00-12:00. The Baker Tradition Walking Tour
Trace the architecture trail of pioneering architect Sir Herbet Baker through Joburg's historic suburbs. The tour begins with a visit to Pilrig, a beautiful home built in 1903 for the Balfour family. Other stops include the glitzy Northwards House which Baker built in 1904 for actress Jose Dale Luce, wife of gold and diamond magnate John Dale Luce, and Baker's so-called Stone House.

From 10:00-12:30. The Wilds Walking Tour
The Wilds, a beautiful 40-acre indigenous yellow wood park on the edge of Parktown, fell into neglect during the turbulent 1990s and 2000s but is now on its way back to regaining its position as one of the city's most beautiful parks. This walking tour is hosted by artist James Delaney who recently created an installation of 67 metal owls in the park and is an opportunity to learn more about the ongoing work to reclaim the dignity of The Wilds.

From 11:15-13:30. Romantic Northwards House Tour
Designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbet Baker for gold and diamond magnate John Dale Luce and his wife Josephine Cornelia (Jose), the glamorous Northwards House is grandly positioned on the top of the Parktown Ridge. This tour takes in the building's immaculately restored interiors and its perfectly groomed gardens.

From 14:00-16:30. Plunge down the Ridge Walking Tour
The Parktown Ridge is home to some of Joburg’s oldest architecture, with landmark buildings that date back as far as 1897, including some designed by the celebrated architect Herbert Baker. This tour starts at the crest of the ridge at the stately Wynford Eagle and traverses the ridge stopping at other beautiful mansions including Le Thalonet, Winstead and House Schneider.

From 14:00-16:30. Then & Now Bus Tour
An exciting mix of the old and the new, this bus tour traverses Joburg’s historic architecture and contemporary additions to the city, from Art Deco masterpieces in downtown Joburg to exciting newly regenerated areas. Stops on the tour include The Fashion Kapitol, the Herbert Baker School of Music and the Art Deco edifices of Jeppe Street.

From 15:00-16:00. Joburg on Film, Film Screening
Celebrating a century of Joburg captured on celluloid, Joburg on Film is a fascinating montage of extraordinary newsreels, adverts and amateur footage of the City of Gold through the years.
