2014 ABSA L'Atelier award-winner Liberty Battson's preferred medium is automotive paint that she uses to create boldly coloured, glossy abstract paintings filled with lines, circles and repeated shapes. In previous exhibitions, Battson created ways to incorporate intricate codes and big data into her distinctive abstract works and paired her paintings with colour 'dictionaries' which viewers could use to 'decode' them.

However, in this latest body of work Battson has left the codes, indexes and data behind, embracing absolute abstractism and vivid colour in a 'pure expression of freedom'. As the artist says 'there is colour and there is line and that is OK'.
