Architect and artist Lorenzo Nassimbeni returns to David Krut Projects for Polygraph, a new exhibition envisioned as a self-portrait portrayed through the lens and lines of the city of Johannesburg.

Made up of four parts and featuring artworks from Nassimbeni’s 2016 exhibition Falling In, the exhibition is a journey around South Africa’s cities, starting in Hillbrow and New Doorfontein and taking a detour through Cape Town before ending back in Joburg, tracing the artist’s most recent footsteps through the city.

Much like in a polygraph, Nassimbeni distils the emotions of a neighbourhood into singular lines. For example the rough and gritty cityscape of Hillbrow is translated into a large, organic shape interspersed with delicate and pristine drafted lines echoing the neighbourhood’s modernist beginnings. As Nassimbeni's travels through the city progress, each layer of lines integrates with grid-like drawings alluding to Joburg’s chaotic energy and the natural and gentler energy of Cape Town. The result is a new “language of line”.

Opening event Thu Oct 18 at 18:00.
