In October of 2022, friends and fans of the label Lukhanyo Mdingi were invited to peer behind the veil of the designer's artful garments with the exhibition, The Provenance Part I. With both a LVMH Karl Lagerfeld Prize and an AMIRI Prize under his belt, Mdingi has enjoyed phenomenal success since he established his namesake brand in 2015, and we've loved watching him go from strength to strength.

The Provenance Part II at Constitution Hill is an opportunity to dive even deeper into this brilliant creative's world. According to Mdingi, the "exhibition focuses on the preservation of archives, looking into the deep lineage of Bantu indigeneity and Black Consciousness in South Africa that has manifested." He draws on textiles, literature, and music to encourage an inquiry into the role of colonialism and mission work in our nation's history. The rich history of Constitution Hill as a venue resonates with the spirit of the project.

"The practice of research is inherently already part of my design process. There is so much that people see of the finished result, however so little within the development and research process, which is just as important," says Mdingi. The exhibition is co-curated with Banele Khoza of BKhz Gallery

The Provenance Part II opens to the public on Thu, Apr 4 from 19:00 – 22:00 at the Women's Jail exhibition wing at Constitution Hill.
