Mad Giant brings together science and an immense love of beer – the brand’s co-founder, Eben Uys, is a thirtysomething chemical engineer whose thorough understanding of froth has made its way into scientific journals. The craft brewery is located in the 1 Fox Precinct, a collection of restored warehouses in Joburg's historic Ferreirasdorp district.

The Mad Giant space was designed by top designer Haldane Martin who melded a sense of industrial history with colourful playfulness installing light fittings and beer garden tables that resemble oversized Meccano sets. At the centre is a sculpted concrete bar resembling a bottletop and behind it lopes an immense metal cutout of a yeti-like Mad Giant. A fun design statement that speaks to the city of gold’s enduring power to make its arrivants dream big.

Much like a wine tasting, the Mad Giant beer tasting is focused on helping you understand the different styles of beer and what kind of flavour profiles to look for. With a fun and accessible approach, it’s also an educational experience that aims to demystify the term Craft Beer. There are four beers available to try on tap - a pilsner, a pale ale, an amber ale and a weiss beer. The Mad Giant team also like to experiment with new seasonal and limited-edition beers, and we have it on good authority that the one to look out for in the near future is a new Porter-style ale (similar to Guinness), aged in old whisky barrels.

All Mad Giant beers are dry-hopped - an expensive and time-consuming brewing technique that results in a high quality beer packed with a memorable aroma and flavour. To get that summer feeling, try the weiss beer Electric Light (tropical fruit notes of passionfruit and banana) or The Guzzler, a crisp, dry and hoppy pilsner. The experts say it is notoriously difficult to produce but we found it a particularly easy beer to drink.

The brewery shares space with Urbanlogi, a sexy Asian-fusion tapas-style restaurant headed by chef Angelo Scirocco (formerly of Cape Town's highly acclaimed Chef’s Warehouse and Canteen on Bree Street) and Mad Giant also has its own sunny beer garden with a grill serving burgers, fries and other casual food that pairs perfectly with a beer on a sunny Joburg day.

In addition there's also a bottle shop next to the tasting room where you can buy cool Mad Giant branded glasses and T-shirts (a brilliant idea for a unique local souvenir) and Mad Giant brews. On Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays the foodhall-style market 1 Fox Market Shed opens next door offering even more reasons to spend the day here.
