In his latest series of images renowned South African photographer Michael Meyersfeld looks at South Africa's process of adaptation following twenty years of democracy. Avoiding the more obvious images of South Africa's transition, Meyersfeld captures the gradual nuances of change in 17 staged black and white photographs that are rich in social commentary.

The photos are presented on Duratrans, a translucent-base film normally used in light boxes, adding a sense of fragility and cinema to his often biting social commentary that puts a fresh and thought-provoking spin on everyday South African life. From a beggar and a paper collector to a young fashionista at a smart bar and an upwardly mobile woman walking the streets of Alexandra township, his subjects are both complex and familiar. With an almost nostalgic tone Meyersfeld says of the Adaptation series; “Perhaps these images are no more than a reflection of something we might have seen or remembered, a wry cameo of another, newer, hopefully happier South Africa.”
