The two artists featured in this dual exhibition - Nic Bladen and Jane Eppel - are connected by a love of nature, and in particular a fascination with Cape Flora.

In “…even at this unfavourable [dry] season…” sculptor Nic Bladen references the works of English botanist, artist and explorer William John Burchelle who was one of the leading experts of Cape Botany in the early 1800s. The exhibition’s title celebrates the tenacity of Cape flora even in severe drought and its diversity. Bladen uses wax castings to create moulds of leaves and organic material, capturing plants from the root to flower, that perfectly illustrate the Cape floral kingdom's unique beauty.

Meanwhile painter and printmaker Jane Eppel’s works are informed by a sense of delicacy featuring subjects like insect larvae and plants. In her exhibition Namesake, Eppel presents her contemporary interpretation of botanical art with nine copperplate etchings and three drawings of intricately detailed studies of local daisies. The two largest etchings Quest and Exult are among the largest etchings produced in South Africa.

Opening event Sat Oct 7 at 10:00.
