On November 11 top fine art auction house Strauss & Co presents another exciting live art auction focusing especially on modern and contemporary South African art. Ahead of the magnifcent pre-auction exhibition at the new Strauss & Co gallery in Houghton join Joburg Heritage for an exclusive tour of the collection going under auction with Strauss & Co's art historians Alastair Meredith and Wilhelm van Rensburg.

The special art tour is themed Pierneef, Preller and Paris and looks at some of the auction's top lots, such as Preller’s exquisite oil painting Icon Barbare (Adam) and a collection of paintings by JH Pierneef, including a remarkable stylised 1946 landscape of a stylised bushveld scene.

A must-visit for anybody with an interest in 20th Century South African art, the exclusive viewing delves into the fascinating careers of the two artists who were both courted by the South African establishment of the time (murals and paintings by both artists can be found at government buildings across the country) while also striving to look outwards to Europe and other parts of Africa for inspiration during an era when this country was becoming ever more conservative.
