With 26 watercolours and a series of prints Potterton maps the places and objects which have become central to Joburg's iconography. From the bottles of Zamalek which make a Friday night, the reclaimers who roam its streets and the drink-o-pop sachets which are hot commodities on the playground, to historic buildings such as Ansteys, the Brixton Tower and the Egoli Gas Works.
Rebecca Potterton studied Fine Art at Wits before swapping to Architecture and while the built and urban-environment is still central to her thinkings and work, the calling of art was too strong to resist and she has now taken up illustration full-time.
The works have been beautifully framed in maple by local carpenter Daniel de Santos and are the perfect Christmas gift for anyone who loves Joburg.
Exhibition opens Sat, Nov 19 at Breezeblock Café. Admission is free.
